Why is the shipping weight higher than the item weight?

Most major shipping carriers base their shipping rates on both the size and weight of the package, using a dimensional weight formula (typically, length x width x height divided by a dimensional weight divisor).

If this dimensional weight exceeds the actual weight, the carrier determines the shipping cost based on the dimensional weight.

Additional surcharges may also be applied on packages that exceed other size limits as specified by the carrier.
