GRADING DEFINITIONS - BOOKS - MAGAZINES - BROCHURES:
o LIKE NEW: Free of any blemishes, original condition throughout, very little sign of use.
o EXCELLENT: Minor shelf wear, exceptionally clean, no marks, stains, odor, creased pages, or tears.
o VERY GOOD: May have shelf wear, small tears on page edges, some dog ears, light stains, some creases, small notes or checks which do not affect legibility.
o GOOD: May have large tears - may be taped, covers or pages may be detached but not missing, may have slight musty odor and show stains or marks.
o FAIR: Generally complete but may have missing pages or covers, large stains or tears, mildew, musty odor.
o POOR: Beat up, junk condition, some usable sections.
Jupiter Jones, First Investigator (The Smart One), and his buddies, Pete Crenshaw, Second Investigator & Bob Andrews, Third Investigator (Records & Research) are three young private eyes who set up "The Three Investigators" professional detective agency. The Three Investigators solve cases by doing research (Bob's specialty), active observation (Pete's specialty) and clever deduction (Jupiter's specialty).
Jupiter, Pete and Bob live in Rocky Beach, a fictional southern California coastal town described as 10 to 12 miles from Hollywood and 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Their secret headquarters is a salvaged trailer buried in a junkyard belonging to Jupiter's Uncle Titus …
The investigators are typically introduced into a mystery through a potential client or by accidentally stumbling upon something unusual. The boys encounter baffling, sometimes misleading clues and danger before finally solving the crime. A major strength of the series is that the boys have to work to find and understand clues, (unlike other contemporary series in which serendipity and coincidence played a frequent role.)
To intrigue potential clients, Jupiter designs a business card with three question marks
Potential clients would often ask what the question marks stood for, thus giving Jupiter an opening to impress them with his explanation that they are "symbolical of questions to be answered, mysteries to be solved."
The last chapter of each book has an epilogue in which the investigators sat with Alfred Hitchcock (and later, Hector Sebastian), reviewing the deductions through the clues shown earlier in the book and revealing how the mystery was ultimately solved.
